Update to this story, Apple (to my immense shock) refunded all five books! The option given in response is to, within 40 days, requeue the order since they keep submitted PDFs for that amount of time, and have my CC be re-charged. But I only need one more book, not five, so I'm thinking I'll just upload a fresh order for one book through iPhoto.
Views of damaged book from iPhoto The corner of this book was victim to, I believe, shipping damage. However, the stitching defect is almost certainly a production error. I find no coincidence in the fact that of the five copies I ordered, this one was shipped alone. The other four came in pairs and were, consequently, better-packed.
